Adoption Process

Please read carefully.

  1. If you are interested in meeting and/or adopting one of our pets, we ask that you please fill out our online adoption application. There is NO commitment on your part OR ours. It just tells us you are serious and guarantees we will look at you before email inquiries.

  2. Pets listed on our site may currently be going through the process of adoption and we therefore cannot guarantee the availability of any listings.

  3. You will be contacted by an adoption coordinator from P.E.T.S. as quickly as possible.  This is usually within 24 hours of receiving the application. (Please be patient, as we all have regular day jobs.)

  4. A HOME VISIT is mandatory prior to adoption of dogs. The goal of the home visit is not only to see where our adoptees will live, but to answer any questions about the potential new family member. Meeting with everyone in the family helps for a better adoption process. Our home visits are not intrusive. The most important thing for us to know is that our animals are going to safe and caring homes and that all members of the family are well informed and prepared for a lifelong commitment with their new companion.

  5. Veterinarian references will be checked for previous and current pets to confirm they have been spayed/neutered and vaccinations are up-to-date.

  6. The county assessor's website will be checked to verify ownership of property, or

  7. Confirmation on pet policies with landlords, if appropriate.

  8. FENCES ARE required for most dogs and most situations. Invisible fences are fine for most dogs.

  9. We will do background check on all applicants and their family members/roommates.

*Please note that we do NOT believe in keeping our adoptable dogs and cats outside and will not adopt to families looking for outdoor pets, unless we believe a particular pet would be happiest outdoors. We want our adoptables to be part of the family - in the house.

*P.E.T.S. retains the right to refuse any potential adopters for any reason.

*P.E.T.S. mainly adopts to residents of Iowa and parts of Illinois, Minnesota, and Nebraska.  Other locations must be by special approval.

*Applicant MUST be at least 21 years old to adopt from P.E.T.S.
